Which of the following will react with alc. KOH ?
  1. (A)Adenine and proline
  2. (B)Adenine and lysine✓ Correct
  3. (C)Adenine and thymine
  4. (D)Thymine and proline

Answer: (B)

Solution

The carbylamine test, with and alcoholic , is given only by primary amines, which are converted to foul-smelling isocyanides. Adenine carries a primary group at position , and lysine has a primary amino group on its side chain, so both respond. Proline is a secondary (cyclic) amine and thymine has no amino group, so they do not. The pair that reacts is adenine and lysine.
