Which of the following statements is correct?
- (A)Gluconic acid is a dicarboxylic acid
- (B)Gluconic acid can form cyclic(acetal/hemiacetal) structure
- (C)Gluconic acid is a partial oxidation product of glucose✓ Correct
- (D)Gluconic acid is obtained by oxidation of glucose with
Answer: (C)
Solution
Gluconic acid comes from the mild oxidation of glucose, in which only the aldehyde is turned into a carboxylic acid while all the other hydroxyl groups stay as they are — a partial oxidation. It carries just one , so it is not dicarboxylic; with the aldehyde gone it can no longer close into a cyclic hemiacetal; and strong would oxidise both ends to give the dicarboxylic glucaric acid instead. The sound description is that gluconic acid is a partial oxidation product of glucose.
