Primary, secondary and tertiary amines can be separated using:
  1. (A)Para -Toluene sulphonyl chloride✓ Correct
  2. (B)Acetyl amide
  3. (C)Chloroform and KOH
  4. (D)Benzene sulphonic acid

Answer: (A)

Solution

Hinsberg's test uses para-toluene sulphonyl chloride (p-TsCl) to distinguish between primary, secondary, and tertiary amines. Primary amines form sulphonamides soluble in alkali, secondary amines form sulphonamides insoluble in alkali, and tertiary amines do not react. This allows separation of the three types of amines.
