Which of the following reaction is an example of ammonolysis?
  1. (A)
  2. (B)
  3. (C)
  4. (D)✓ Correct

Answer: (D)

Solution

Ammonolysis is the cleavage of a carbon–halogen bond by ammonia acting as the nucleophile, giving an amine and a hydrogen halide. Reduction of a nitrile to a primary amine, acylation of aniline by benzoyl chloride to an anilide, and salt formation between aniline and hydrogen chloride all involve no displacement of halogen from carbon by ammonia. Benzyl chloride treated with ammonia gives benzylamine by exactly such a displacement, so that reaction is the example of ammonolysis.
