An inclined plane making an angle of 30∘ with the horizontal is placed in a uniform horizontal electric field 200CN as shown in the figure. A body of mass 1 kg and charge 5 mC is allowed to slide down from rest at a height of 1 m. If the coefficient of friction is 0.2, find the time taken by the body to reach the bottom.
[g=9.8m/s2;sin30∘=21;cos30∘=23]
(A)1.3 s✓ Correct
(B)0.46 s
(C)2.3 s
(D)0.92 s
Answer: (A)
Solution
The electric force on the body is qE=5×10−3×200=1 N, horizontal and pointing into the slope. It has a component qEcos30∘ up the incline and a component qEsin30∘ pressing the body against the surface, so the normal reaction is
N=mgcos30∘+qEsin30∘=9.8×23+1×21=8.99N
and the friction is μN=0.2×8.99=1.80 N, acting up the slope against the sliding. Along the slope, with m=1 kg,
ma=mgsin30∘−qEcos30∘−μN=4.90−0.87−1.80=2.23N
giving a=2.23ms−2. The slope length for a drop of 1 m is s=sin30∘1=2 m, and starting from rest s=21at2 gives
t=2.232×2=1.3s
The body reaches the bottom of the incline in 1.3 s.
