In the circle given below, let OA=1 unit, OB=13 unit and PQ⊥OB. Then, the area of the triangle PQB (in square units) is :
(A)243✓ Correct
(B)262
(C)242
(D)263
Answer: (A)
Solution
OB is a diameter of the circle and PQ is the chord through A perpendicular to it, so A is the midpoint of PQ. Here OA=1 and OB=13, so AB=13−1=12. The two chords OB and PQ cut at A, and therefore
PA⋅AQ=OA⋅AB=1×12=12
Since PA=AQ, PA=23 and PQ=43. In triangle PQB the side PQ is a base and AB=12 is the perpendicular distance from B to it, so
Area=21×43×12=243
The area of triangle PQB is 243 square units.
