Let PQ and MN be two straight lines touching the circle x2+y2−4x−6y−3=0 at the points A and B respectively. Let O be the centre of the circle and ∠AOB=π/3. Then the locus of the point of intersection of the lines PQ and MN is:
(A)3(x2+y2)−18x−12y+25=0
(B)x2+y2−12x−18y−25=0
(C)x2+y2−18x−12y−25=0
(D)3(x2+y2)−12x−18y−25=0✓ Correct
Answer: (D)
Solution
The circle has centre O(2,3) and radius r=4+9+3=4. If the tangents from a point R(h,k) touch at A and B with ∠AOB=3π, then each radius makes 6π with OR; from the right angle at the point of contact, cos6π=ORr, so OR=38 and OR2=364. Thus (h−2)2+(k−3)2=364, i.e. h2+k2−4h−6k+13=364; multiplying by 3, the locus is 3(x2+y2)−12x−18y−25=0.
