The correct structures of A and B formed in the following reactions are:
(A)(see structures)AB
(B)(see structures)AB✓ Correct
(C)(see structures)AB
(D)(see structures)AB
Answer: (B)
Solution
Catalytic hydrogenation with H2/Pd reduces the nitro group of p-nitrophenol to an amino group, giving p-aminophenol as A while the phenolic −OH is left intact. With one equivalent of acetic anhydride the more nucleophilic −NH2 is acetylated in preference to the phenolic −OH, so B is N-(4-hydroxyphenyl)acetamide (paracetamol), whose ring −OH remains free. A is p-aminophenol and B is N-(4-hydroxyphenyl)acetamide.
