The total number of amines among the following which can be synthesized by Gabriel synthesis is.
(A) (see structure)
(B) (see structure)
(C) (see structure)
(D) (see structure)
Structure A
A
Structure B
B
Structure C
C
Structure D
D

Answer: 3

Solution

Gabriel's phthalimide synthesis builds a primary amine through an displacement on an alkyl halide, so it succeeds for primary aliphatic and benzylic amines but fails for aromatic amines, since an aryl halide will not undergo that substitution. Isobutylamine, ethylamine and benzylamine can each be made this way, whereas aniline cannot, giving three amines in all.
