For above chemical reactions, identify the correct statement from the followingAB
(A)Both compound 'A' and compound 'B' are dicarboxylic acids.
(B)Compound 'A' is dicarboxylic acid and compound 'B' is diol.✓ Correct
(C)Compound 'A' is diol and compound 'B' is dicarboxylic acid.
(D)Both compound 'A' and compound 'B' are diols.
Answer: (B)
Solution
Hot acidic permanganate is a drastic oxidant and cleaves the double bond of cyclohexene completely: each of the two carbons of the former double bond is oxidised to a carboxyl group, so the ring opens and hexanedioic acid is obtained. Cold dilute permanganate at 273K is Baeyer's reagent, which adds through a cyclic manganate ester and delivers two hydroxyl groups to the same face of the double bond, leaving the ring intact as cis-cyclohexane-1,2-diol. Compound A is a dicarboxylic acid and compound B is a diol.
