Two blocks of masses 3 kg and 5 kg are connected by a metal wire going over a smooth pulley. The breaking stress of the metal is π24×102Nm−2. What is the minimum radius of the wire? (take g=10ms−2 )
(A)1250 cm
(B)125 cm
(C)12.5 cm✓ Correct
(D)1.25 cm
Answer: (C)
Solution
For two masses over a light smooth pulley the tension in the connecting wire is
T=m1+m22m1m2g=3+52(3)(5)(10)=37.5N
The wire is on the point of breaking when the stress equals the breaking stress:
πr2T=π24×102⇒r2=24×10237.5=1.5625×10−2m2
so r=0.125 m, that is a minimum radius of 12.5 cm.
