Given below are two statements. One is labelled as Assertion A and the other is labelled as Reason R.

Assertion A : [6] Annulene. [8] Annulene and cis -[10] Annulene, are respectively aromatic, not-aromatic and aromatic.

Reason R: Planarity is one of the requirements of aromatic systems.

In the light of the above statements, choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below.
Structure A
A
Structure B
B
Structure C
C
  1. (A)Both A and R are correct and R is the correct explanation of A.
  2. (B)Both A and R are correct but R is NOT the correct explanation of A.
  3. (C)A is correct but R is not correct.
  4. (D)A is not correct but R is correct.✓ Correct

Answer: (D)

Solution

Benzene, the annulene, is planar, has six electrons and obeys the rule, so it is aromatic; annulene has eight electrons, fails the rule and settles into a non-planar tub shape, so it is non-aromatic. The cis- annulene does carry ten electrons, which would satisfy with , but the two hydrogen atoms pointing into the ring interior repel one another so strongly that the molecule cannot remain planar, and without planarity the orbitals cannot overlap in a continuous ring, so it is not aromatic. The assertion, which labels cis- annulene aromatic, is therefore wrong, while the reason, that planarity is a requirement for aromaticity, is a correct and general statement.
