How many of the transformation given below would result in aromatic amines? (1) (2) (3) (4)
Answer: 3
Solution
The first change is a Hofmann bromamide degradation of benzamide, which gives aniline. The second attempts a Gabriel synthesis on chlorobenzene, but an aryl halide does not react with potassium phthalimide, so no amine is formed. The third is catalytic reduction of nitrobenzene to aniline, and the fourth is acidic hydrolysis of acetanilide back to aniline. Three of the four transformations give an aromatic amine.
