Testosterone, which is a steroidal hormone, has the following structure.
The total number of asymmetric carbon atom/s in testosterone is ______
Answer: 6
Solution
An asymmetric carbon carries four different groups. In testosterone the two angular ring-junction carbons bearing the methyl groups, the two further ring-fusion carbons joining the central rings, the ring-junction carbon of the five-membered ring, and the carbon carrying the hydroxyl are each bonded to four distinct groups. The carbon of the ring double bond in the first ring is trigonal and is not a stereocentre. Counting the genuine stereocentres gives six asymmetric carbon atoms.
