Given below are two statements :
Statement I: Pure Aniline and other arylamines are usually colourless.
Statement II : Arylamines get coloured on storage due to atmospheric reduction.
In the light of the above statements, choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below :
  1. (A)Both Statement I and Statement II are incorrect
  2. (B)Both Statement I and Statement II are correct
  3. (C)Statement I is correct but Statement II is incorrect✓ Correct
  4. (D)Statement I is incorrect but Statement II is correct

Answer: (C)

Solution

Pure aniline and other aromatic amines are colourless liquids or solids when freshly prepared, so the first statement is correct. On standing they darken because the ring and the amino group are oxidised by atmospheric oxygen to coloured products, not because of any reduction, so the second statement, which blames reduction, is incorrect. The first statement is correct while the second is incorrect.
