Choose the correct representation of conductometric titration of benzoic acid vs sodium hydroxide.
(A)(see structure)
(B)(see structure)✓ Correct
(C)(see structure)
(D)(see structure)
Answer: (B)
Solution
Benzoic acid is a weak acid, so the starting solution carries few ions and its conductance begins low. As sodium hydroxide is added the acid is converted to sodium benzoate; the salt is fully ionised, and the rising benzoate and sodium ion content lifts the conductance gradually up to the equivalence point. Beyond that point the added hydroxide introduces highly mobile hydroxide ions, and the conductance then climbs steeply. The curve that starts low, rises gently to the end point and then rises sharply represents this titration.
