Consider a block kept on an inclined plane (inclined at 45∘ ) as shown in the figure. If the force required to just push it up the incline is 2 times the force required to just prevent it from sliding down, the coefficient of friction between the block and inclined plane ( μ ) is equal to :
(A)0.33✓ Correct
(B)0.60
(C)0.25
(D)0.50
Answer: (A)
Solution
On the 45∘ incline the push needed to start the block moving up must overcome gravity along the slope and friction together, F1=mgsin45∘+μmgcos45∘, while the push needed to just stop it sliding down is the shortfall of gravity over friction, F2=mgsin45∘−μmgcos45∘. Setting F1=2F2 and cancelling 2mg gives 1+μ=2(1−μ), hence 3μ=1 and the coefficient of friction is μ=31≈0.33.
