Explain what is meant by:
i) peptide linkage
ii) pyranose structure of glucose
i) peptide linkage
ii) pyranose structure of glucose
Solution
(i) The \textbf{peptide linkage} is the amide bond –CO–NH– between the carboxyl of one amino acid and the amino group of the next.
(ii) The \textbf{pyranose structure}: glucose's C-5 –OH adds to the C-1 aldehyde, closing a six-membered ring of five carbons and one oxygen (named after pyran) — the cyclic hemiacetal in which glucose actually exists (α and β forms).
(ii) The \textbf{pyranose structure}: glucose's C-5 –OH adds to the C-1 aldehyde, closing a six-membered ring of five carbons and one oxygen (named after pyran) — the cyclic hemiacetal in which glucose actually exists (α and β forms).
