Case study — Vitamins: certain organic compounds required in small amounts in our diet whose deficiency causes specific diseases. Most vitamins cannot be synthesised in our body, but plants can synthesise almost all of them; gut bacteria produce some. The term 'vitamin' was coined from vital + amine. Vitamins are classified by solubility into fat-soluble and water-soluble groups.
(a) What is the other name of vitamin B₆?
(b) Name the vitamin whose deficiency increases blood-clotting time.
(c) Xerophthalmia is caused by deficiency of which vitamin? Give two sources of this vitamin.

Answer: (a) Pyridoxine. (b) Vitamin K. (c) Vitamin A; sources — fish-liver oil, carrots (butter, milk).

Solution

(a) Vitamin B = \textbf{pyridoxine}.
(b) \textbf{Vitamin K} (needed for coagulation; deficiency prolongs clotting time).
(c) \textbf{Vitamin A} — sources: fish-liver oil and carrots (also butter, milk).
