Describe the following:
i) glycosidic linkage
ii) peptide linkage
i) glycosidic linkage
ii) peptide linkage
Solution
(i) \textbf{Glycosidic linkage}: when two monosaccharide units condense (losing water), an oxygen bridge –O– forms between them — as between glucose and fructose in sucrose.
(ii) \textbf{Peptide linkage}: the amide bond –CO–NH– formed when the –COOH of one amino acid condenses with the –NH of the next, losing water.
(ii) \textbf{Peptide linkage}: the amide bond –CO–NH– formed when the –COOH of one amino acid condenses with the –NH of the next, losing water.
