i) Which forces are responsible for the stability of the α-helix?
ii) What is a denatured protein?

Solution

(i) The α-helix is pinned by \textbf{intramolecular hydrogen bonds} — each amide N–H to the carbonyl oxygen of the fourth residue along the coil.
(ii) A \textbf{denatured protein} has had its secondary and tertiary structure destroyed (helices uncoiled, globules unfolded) by heat or pH change, losing biological activity while the primary chain survives — boiled egg albumin.
