What is meant by 'reducing sugars'?

Solution

Carbohydrates that carry a free (or potentially free) aldehyde/ketone group — a free anomeric –OH — and therefore reduce Fehling's solution (red CuO) and Tollens' reagent (silver mirror) are \textbf{reducing sugars}: glucose, fructose, maltose, lactose.
