Write the structures of A, B and C in the following reactions:
i) C₆H₅COO⁻NH₄⁺ →Δ→ A →Br₂/KOH→ B →CH₃COCl/pyridine→ C
ii) C₆H₅N₂⁺BF₄⁻ →NaNO₂/Cu, Δ→ A →Sn/HCl→ B →CHCl₃ + alc. KOH→ C

Answer: (i) A = C₆H₅CONH₂; B = C₆H₅NH₂; C = acetanilide. (ii) A = C₆H₅NO₂; B = C₆H₅NH₂; C = C₆H₅NC.

Solution

(i) A: benzamide (the ammonium salt dehydrates on heating).
B: aniline (Hofmann bromamide).
C: acetanilide, CHNHCOCH.
(ii) A: nitrobenzene (diazonium + NaNO/Cu).
B: aniline (Sn/HCl).
C: phenyl isocyanide, CHNC (carbylamine reaction).
