Give reasons for the following: sulphanilic acid is insoluble in water but is soluble in both aqueous bases and aqueous mineral acids taken separately.
Solution
As the internal salt the molecule binds itself in a high-melting ionic lattice that plain water cannot break.
In aqueous base: the –NH loses its proton → the soluble anion HN–CH–SO.
In aqueous acid: the –SO is protonated → the soluble cation HN–CH–SOH.
