Give chemical tests to distinguish between the following pairs of compounds:
i) ethylamine and aniline
ii) aniline and benzylamine
i) ethylamine and aniline
ii) aniline and benzylamine
Solution
(i) Diazotise and add alkaline β-naphthol: aniline → orange azo dye; ethylamine → N bubbles, no dye.
(ii) Treat with NaNO/HCl at 273–278 K: benzylamine (aliphatic-type –CHNH) gives instant N effervescence (benzyl alcohol forms); aniline's diazonium is stable cold and gives the azo dye with β-naphthol.
(ii) Treat with NaNO/HCl at 273–278 K: benzylamine (aliphatic-type –CHNH) gives instant N effervescence (benzyl alcohol forms); aniline's diazonium is stable cold and gives the azo dye with β-naphthol.
