Illustrate the following with an example reaction:
i) ambident nucleophile
ii) Hinsberg test
i) ambident nucleophile
ii) Hinsberg test
Solution
(i) Cyanide attacks through C or N:
(ii) Benzenesulphonyl chloride (Hinsberg's reagent):
1° amine → RNH–SOCH, whose N–H is acidic — \textbf{dissolves in KOH};
2° amine → RN–SOCH, no N–H — \textbf{insoluble in KOH};
3° amine → no reaction.
