Give a chemical test to distinguish between ethylamine and aniline.

Solution

Treat each with NaNO/HCl at 273–278 K, then pour into alkaline β-naphthol:
aniline → a stable diazonium salt → brilliant \textbf{orange azo dye};
ethylamine's diazonium decomposes at once, evolving N with no dye.
(Alternatively, bromine water: aniline gives a white precipitate instantly.)
