Write the structures of the products when butan-2-ol reacts with the following:
(a) CrO
(b) SOCl

Answer: (a) Butan-2-one, CH₃COCH₂CH₃. (b) 2-Chlorobutane, CH₃CHClCH₂CH₃ (+ SO₂ + HCl).

Solution

(a) CrO oxidises the 2° alcohol to the ketone:

(b) Thionyl chloride swaps –OH for –Cl:
