Complete the two reactions shown in the figure (Delhi 2009 pair — an ether cleavage and a ring substitution).

Solution

The displayed pair complete by the standard rules:
• an ether + HI (one mole, cold) cleaves at the less hindered O–alkyl bond: R–O–R' + HI → R–I (smaller R) + R'–OH; with an aryl alkyl ether the products are ArOH + RI (never ArI);
• a phenol substrate with the printed electrophilic reagent substitutes at its ortho/para positions (–OH directing).
Write each product from the figure accordingly, with inorganic by-products.
