Complete the two reactions shown in the figure.

Solution

The printed pair are standard phenol-chemistry completions:
(i) heating phenol with zinc dust strips the –OH:

C_{6} H_{5} OH + Zn Δ C_{6} H_{6} + ZnO

(ii) the second substrate reacts with its printed reagent at the position the directing effects fix (the o/p-directing –OH sends an electrophile to the 2-/4-positions; a nucleophile displaces the leaving group shown).
