a) Give a chemical test to distinguish between phenol and ethanol under seemingly similar conditions.
b) Write the reaction equation for what happens when tertiary butyl alcohol is heated over reduced copper at about 573 K.
b) Write the reaction equation for what happens when tertiary butyl alcohol is heated over reduced copper at about 573 K.
Solution
(a) Add neutral FeCl: phenol gives a violet colouration; ethanol gives none. (Bromine water — white precipitate with phenol only — also works.)
(b) Over reduced copper a tertiary alcohol undergoes dehydration (not dehydrogenation):
(2-methylpropene).
