Mention two important uses of methanol.

Answer: (1) Solvent for paints and varnishes; (2) manufacture of formaldehyde (→ bakelite and other resins). Also fuel additive.

Solution

Uses of methanol:
  1. As a solvent in paints, varnishes and shellacs.
  2. For manufacturing methanal (formaldehyde), the raw material of bakelite and urea–formaldehyde resins.
(Also: denaturing ethanol, fuel/antifreeze.)
