How are the following conversions carried out?
i) benzyl chloride to benzyl alcohol
ii) methyl magnesium bromide to 2-methylpropan-2-ol
i) benzyl chloride to benzyl alcohol
ii) methyl magnesium bromide to 2-methylpropan-2-ol
Solution
(i) Benzyl chloride hydrolyses readily with aqueous alkali:
(ii) Treat the Grignard reagent with propanone (acetone) and hydrolyse the adduct:
Product: 2-methylpropan-2-ol (a 3° alcohol — ketone + RMgX).
