Give the IUPAC name of the following compound (structure shown in the figure).
Structure Structure for IUPAC naming (4-bromo-3-methylpent-2-ene)
Structure for IUPAC naming (4-bromo-3-methylpent-2-ene)

Answer: 4-Bromo-3-methylpent-2-ene.

Solution

The structure is CH–CH=C(CH)–CHBr–CH.
Longest chain through the double bond: pent-2-ene; substituents at C-3 (methyl) and C-4 (bromo), numbering to give the double bond the lowest locant.
