The equivalent resistance of the circuit shown below between points a and b is:
(A)24Ω
(B)3.2Ω✓ Correct
(C)20Ω
(D)16Ω
Answer: (B)
Solution
Label the apex junction P and the central junction Q. The branch a→P→b is two 4Ω resistors in series (8Ω), and so is the branch a→Q→b (8Ω). The network is symmetric in these two arms, so P and Q stay at the same potential and the 4Ω resistor joining them carries no current. The two 8Ω arms then combine in parallel to 168×8=4Ω, which sits in parallel with the 16Ω resistor directly across a and b. Hence Rab=4+164×16=2064=3.2Ω.
