An arc PQ of a circle subtends a right angle at its centre O. The mid point of the arc PQ is R. If OP=u, OR=v and OQ=αu+βv, then α,β2 are the roots of the equation
(A)x2−x−2=0✓ Correct
(B)3x2+2x−1=0
(C)x2+x−2=0
(D)3x2−2x−1=0
Answer: (A)
Solution
Place O at the origin with ∣u∣=∣v∣=r. From the figure OP=u lies along the positive y-axis, OQ along the positive x-axis, and OR=v bisects the right angle at 45∘. Thus u=(0,r), v=(2r,2r) and OQ=(r,0). Writing OQ=αu+βv=(2βr,αr+2βr)=(r,0), the first component gives β=2 and the second gives α+2β=0, so α=−1. Hence the roots are α=−1 and β2=2, and the quadratic with these roots is (x+1)(x−2)=x2−x−2=0.
