A molecule undergoes two independent first order reactions whose respective half lives are 12 min and 3 min . If both the reactions are occurring then the time taken for the consumption of the reactant is ____ min. (Nearest integer)

Answer: 2

Solution

When one reactant is consumed by two parallel first-order routes, the rates add, so the effective rate constant is . Since a first-order rate constant is inversely proportional to its half-life, the reciprocals of the half-lives add: , so the effective half-life is min. This is the time for half, that is fifty per cent, of the reactant to be used up, which to the nearest integer is two minutes.
