A compound ' X ' when treated with phthalic anhydride in presence of concentrated H2SO4 yields ' Y '. ' Y ' is used as an acid/base indicator. ' X ' and ' Y ' are respectively:
(A)Carbolic acid, Phenolphthalein✓ Correct
(B)Anisole, methyl orange
(C)Salicylaldehyde, Phenolphthalein
(D)Toludine, Phenolphthalein
Answer: (A)
Solution
Carbolic acid is another name for phenol. When two molecules of phenol condense with one molecule of phthalic anhydride in the presence of concentrated sulphuric acid, a molecule of water is lost and phenolphthalein is produced. Phenolphthalein stays colourless in acidic medium and turns pink in basic medium, which is why it serves as an acid\u2013base indicator. Here X is carbolic acid and Y is phenolphthalein.
