Major product 'P' formed in the following reaction is :-
(A)(see structure)
(B)(see structure)✓ Correct
(C)(see structure)
(D)(see structure)
Answer: (B)
Solution
Sodium bicarbonate first converts the carboxylic acid into its carboxylate ion. Bromine then adds to the terminal double bond of pent-4-enoic acid through a cyclic bromonium ion. The carboxylate oxygen attacks the ring carbon from the opposite face in a five-membered closure, opening the bromonium ion and forming a gamma-lactone. The bromine that remains ends up on the terminal carbon as a bromomethyl group. The major product is the gamma-butyrolactone bearing a bromomethyl substituent on the carbon next to the ring oxygen.
