Which of the following can reduce decomposition of on exposure to light
- (A)Alkali
- (B)Urea✓ Correct
- (C)Dust
- (D)Glass containers
Answer: (B)
Solution
Hydrogen peroxide slowly decomposes into water and oxygen, and this is speeded up by light, dust, rough surfaces and traces of alkali. To check this a stabiliser such as urea is added, which suppresses the decomposition and improves the keeping quality of the solution. Alkali and dust promote decomposition, and ordinary glass does not stop the light-induced reaction. The substance that reduces the decomposition is urea.
