The reading of the ammeter (A) in steady state in the following circuit (assuming negligible internal resistance of the ammeter) is ____ A.
(A)2
(B)1✓ Correct
(C)1/2
(D)0
Answer: (B)
Solution
In the steady state the capacitor is fully charged and passes no current, so the branch holding the 10μF capacitor in series with its 8Ω resistor is effectively open. The ideal ammeter has no resistance, so the node where it sits lies at the battery's negative terminal potential. Measured from the node just after the 1Ω resistor, two routes reach that terminal: the lone 8Ω resistor, and the 4Ω resistor followed by the two 8Ω resistors in parallel (8∥8=4Ω), i.e. 4+4=8Ω. These two 8Ω routes in parallel give 4Ω, and with the series 1Ω the battery sees 5Ω and drives 510=2 A, putting that node at 10−2(1)=8 V. The ammeter carries only the current of the 4Ω+4Ω route, 88=1 A. The ammeter reads 1 A.
