Two circular discs of radius each 10 cm are joined at their centres by a rod of length 30 cm and mass 600 gm as shown in figure. If the mass of each disc is 600 gm and applied torque between two discs is 43×105 dyne cm, the angular acceleration of the discs about the given axis AB is ______ rad/s2.
(A)22
(B)11✓ Correct
(C)100
(D)27
Answer: (B)
Solution
Take R=10cm, each disc mass m=600g, rod mass 600g and rod length 30cm. From the figure the axis AB is perpendicular to the rod, lying 10cm from the centre of the left disc and 20cm from the centre of the right disc. Each disc lies in a plane perpendicular to the rod, so the vertical axis through its own centre is a diameter, about which its moment of inertia is 41mR2; the parallel-axis theorem then shifts this to AB.
Left disc: 41(600)(102)+600(102)=75000g⋅cm2.
Right disc: 41(600)(102)+600(202)=255000g⋅cm2.
The centre of the rod lies 5cm from the axis, so Irod=121(600)(302)+600(52)=60000g⋅cm2.
The total moment of inertia about AB is
I=75000+255000+60000=3.9×105g⋅cm2.
With the applied torque τ=43×105dyne⋅cm,
α=Iτ=3.9×10543×105≈11rad/s2.
