The unsaturated ether on acidic hydrolysis produces carbonyl compounds as shown below:- CH3−CH2−CH=O and O=CH−CH3 Based on this, predict the solution / reagent that will help to distinguish "P" and "Q" obtained in the following reaction.
(A)Lucas reagent
(B)2,4-DNP reagent
(C)Saturated NaHSO3 solution
(D)Fehling solution✓ Correct
Answer: (D)
Solution
Acidic hydrolysis cleaves the unsaturated ether at oxygen, and each resulting enol tautomerises to a carbonyl compound. The propenyl side CH3CH=CH−O− gives the enol CH3CH=CHOH, which rearranges to propanal CH3CH2CHO (P); the isopropenyl side −O−C(CH3)=CH2 gives CH2=C(CH3)OH, which rearranges to acetone CH3COCH3 (Q). To tell an aldehyde from a ketone, Fehling's solution is used: the aldehyde P reduces it to a brick-red precipitate of Cu2O while the ketone Q gives no reaction. Fehling's solution distinguishes P and Q.
