Identify the diamagnetic octahedral complex ions from below ; A. [Mn(CN)6]3− B. [Co(NH3)6]3+ C. [Fe(CN)6]4− D. [Co(H2O)3F3]
Choose the correct answer from the options given below :
(A)B and D Only
(B)A and D Only
(C)A and C Only
(D)B and C Only✓ Correct
Answer: (D)
Solution
In an octahedral field the pairing turns on the metal d-count and the ligand strength. [Mn(CN)6]3− is Mn3+, d4; even with strong-field CN− (low spin t2g4) one unpaired electron remains, so it is paramagnetic. [Co(NH3)6]3+ is Co3+, d6; strong-field NH3 gives t2g6eg0 with all electrons paired, so it is diamagnetic. [Fe(CN)6]4− is Fe2+, d6; strong-field CN− gives t2g6, again fully paired and diamagnetic. [Co(H2O)3F3] is Co3+, d6, but the weak-field H2O and F− give high spin t2g4eg2 with four unpaired electrons, so it is paramagnetic. The diamagnetic complexes are [Co(NH3)6]3+ and [Fe(CN)6]4−.
