A capillary tube of radius 0.1 mm is partly dipped in water (surface tension 70dyn/cm and glass water contact angle ≃0∘ ) with 30∘ inclined with vertical. The length of water risen in the capillary is ____ cm . (Take g=9.8m/s2 )
(A)582✓ Correct
(B)257
(C)571
(D)568
Answer: (A)
Solution
The vertical rise is h=ρgr2Tcosθ. In CGS units, with T=70dyn/cm, ρ=1g/cm3, g=980cm/s2 and r=0.01cm, this gives h=1×980×0.012×70=9.8140≈14.3cm. Surface tension raises water to the same vertical height whatever the tilt, so along a tube inclined at 30∘ to the vertical the wetted length is ℓ=cos30∘h=32h≈16.5cm. The length of water risen in the capillary is 582cm.
