Which of the following compounds is least likely to give effervescence of CO2 in presence of aq. NaHCO3 ?
(A)(see structure)
(B)(see structure)
(C)Ph−NH3(+)Cl(−)
(D)(see structure)✓ Correct
Answer: (D)
Solution
Only acids stronger than carbonic acid liberate carbon dioxide from sodium bicarbonate. Picric acid, a phenol bearing three nitro groups, and p-nitrobenzoic acid are both acidic enough, and the anilinium ion is also sufficiently acidic to react. m-Nitrophenol, however, is a much weaker acid than carbonic acid, so it does not displace carbon dioxide from bicarbonate. The compound least likely to give effervescence is m-nitrophenol.
