Identify the structure of the final product (D) in the following sequence of the reactions :
(see reaction scheme)
Total number of sp2 hybridised carbon atoms in product D is.
Answer: 7
Solution
Acetophenone reacts with phosphorus pentachloride, which replaces the carbonyl oxygen by two chlorines to give the gem-dichloride Ph-CCl2-CH3. Three equivalents of sodium amide carry out two successive eliminations and then remove the terminal alkyne proton, giving sodium phenylacetylide; acidification liberates phenylacetylene, Ph-C≡C-H. Diborane followed by alkaline hydrogen peroxide adds water across the triple bond in anti-Markovnikov fashion, giving an enol that tautomerises to the final aldehyde, Ph-CH2-CHO. In this phenylacetaldehyde the six ring carbons and the carbonyl carbon are sp2 while the methylene carbon is sp3, so the number of sp2 carbon atoms is seven.
