Which among the following compounds give yellow solid when reacted with NaOI/NaOH ? (A) (B) CH3−CH2−CH2−OH (C) (D) (E)
Choose the correct answer from the options given below :ACDE
(A)(B), (C) and (E) Only
(B)(A) and (C) Only✓ Correct
(C)(C) and (D) Only
(D)(A), (C) and (D) Only
Answer: (B)
Solution
The haloform reaction with sodium hypoiodite gives the yellow solid iodoform only from a methyl group attached to a carbonyl, CH3CO−, or a methyl group on a carbinol carbon, CH3CH(OH)−, which is first oxidised to the methyl ketone. Butan-2-ol carries the CH3CH(OH)− unit and butanone carries the CH3CO− unit, so both give the yellow iodoform. Propan-1-ol, acetic acid and propanal lack this grouping and give no yellow solid. The compounds that give the yellow solid are butan-2-ol and butanone.
