Given below are two statements :
Statement (I) : In octahedral complexes, when high spin complexes are formed. When low spin complexes are formed.
Statement (II) : In tetrahedral complexes because of , low spin complexes are rarely formed.
In the light of the above statements, choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below :
Statement (I) : In octahedral complexes, when high spin complexes are formed. When low spin complexes are formed.
Statement (II) : In tetrahedral complexes because of , low spin complexes are rarely formed.
In the light of the above statements, choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below :
- (A)Statement I is correct but Statement II is incorrect.
- (B)Both Statement I and Statement II are incorrect
- (C)Statement I is incorrect but Statement II is correct
- (D)Both Statement I and Statement II are correct✓ Correct
Answer: (D)
Solution
In an octahedral field the electrons occupy the upper set rather than pair when the splitting is smaller than the pairing energy, giving a high-spin complex, and they pair in the lower set when exceeds the pairing energy, giving a low-spin complex, so the first statement is sound. In a tetrahedral field the splitting is only about four-ninths of the octahedral value and stays below the pairing energy for ordinary ligands, so the electrons seldom pair and low-spin tetrahedral complexes are rarely met, so the second statement is sound as well. Both statements are correct.
