Let P be a parabola with vertex (2,3) and directrix 2x+y=6. Let an ellipse E:a2x2+b2y2=1,a>b of eccentricity 21 pass through the focus of the parabola P. Then the square of the length of the latus rectum of E, is
(A)8385
(B)8347
(C)25512
(D)25656✓ Correct
Answer: (D)
Solution
The directrix 2x+y=6 has slope −2, so the axis of the parabola (perpendicular to the directrix, through the vertex (2,3)) has slope 21.
Distance from vertex (2,3) to the directrix: 5∣2(2)+3−6∣=51; this equals the vertex-to-focus distance a.
The foot of the perpendicular from the vertex to the directrix, Z, is obtained by moving from the vertex a distance a along the inward normal 5(2,1) (chosen so as to decrease 2x+y, since 2(2)+3=7>6):
Z=(2,3)−51⋅5(2,1)=(2,3)−(52,51)=(1.6,2.8).
The focus lies on the opposite side of the vertex from Z, at the same distance, so the vertex is the midpoint of focus and Z:
Focus=2(2,3)−(1.6,2.8)=(2.4,3.2).
The ellipse E:a2x2+b2y2=1 (with a>b) has eccentricity 21, so b2=a2(1−e2)=2a2, i.e. a2=2b2.
Since E passes through the focus (2.4,3.2):
2b2(2.4)2+b2(3.2)2=1
2b25.76+b210.24=1
b22.88+10.24=1⇒b2=13.12=25328.
The square of the latus rectum length is (a2b2)2=a24b4=2b24b4=2b2=2⋅25328=25656.
